Manu Chao for Amazonia
The Artist Manu Chao, wrote a song named Acontecer - ‘happening’, after visiting the Tikuna indigenous community in Amazonia.
‘‘The song is inspired by a Tikuna dream, and it expresses the deep pain for the mistreatment of their Mamazonia — the great river, lung of their lungs.’’
‘HAPPENING’ Lyrics - English Translation
MAMAZONIA
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THE EARTH
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THE AIR
AND WITH OUR FOOD
PLASTIC FOR LUNCH.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THE NIGHT
SLOW DARK SOLITUDE
AND WITH OUR AMAZON
THAT IS IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION.
MAMAZONIA
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THE SUN,
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THE RIVER,
AND WITH OUR LIFE,
IF OUR WATER IS POLLUTED
MAMAZONIA
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THE MOON
WHEN YOU CAN'T MAKE MOONLIGHT,
MY PEOPLE
SLAVED EVERY DAY TO WORK.
IT'S LOVE
IT'S LOVE
AND LOVE IS
MAMAZONIA
BETWEEN BEING HUMAN
TO LIVE WITHOUT ANY PAIN.
IT'S LOVE
IT'S LOVE
AND LOVE IS
BETWEEN ALL OF US.
Awareness.
Climate change, deforestation and fires, could cause the world’s largest rainforest to dry out. The big question is, how soon that might happen? We can already feel the vulnerability of this large ecosystem. Big parts of the Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest, are being cut down and burnt. Tree clearing has already shrunk the forest by around 15%. It’s inevitable to ask — for how long Amazonia will be able to endure all this?
Will the Amazon exist for the future generations?
The indigenous people are the first one to feel the consequences of climate change. Human actions are putting in danger not only Nature, but also the indigenous communities, that might not be there anymore in the future.
